World leaders have started planning their next steps after United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday (April 2) unveiled sweeping tariffs. Many are seeking to strike deals with the American leader to lower these levies. Louis DeSipio, professor of political science at the University of California, Irvine, tells CNA’s Asia First that prices in the US will start rising “almost immediately”, which will not sit well with voters. “We’ve already seen dramatic losses in stock markets all over the world, but I think, more importantly, in terms of President Trump’s support domestically, prices will begin going up almost immediately and I don’t think his supporters really anticipate that,” says DeSipio.
