Supporting incarcerated people who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree

“University of California, Irvine has a program [UCI LIFTED] that gives people who are incarcerated in California an opportunity to pursue and obtain a bachelor’s degree.” “It [the program] gives them the opportunity to obtain an education. My job is to guide them and teach them about their possibilities and what they can do once they have an education,” said Hector Cervantes, director [associate specialist] of UCI’s Underground Scholars Program, which is associated with UCI LIFTED… “And then we want to inspire other UCs to integrate this program into other prisons. Our hope is that there will be ‘triangles of representation’ with community colleges, UC schools and prisons partnering across the state,” said Keramet Reiter, UCI professor of criminology, law and society and director of UCI LIFTED.
