Despite their desire to steer clear of the two major parties, surveys show most people who are registered as no party preference [NPP], or who view themselves as independent, actually lean pretty strongly right or left in the ballot box, said Carole Uhlaner, political science professor at UC Irvine. In some cases, partisan lean is even more pronounced among NPP voters than it is among the average Democrat or Republican.
