- Sabrina Strings, sociology, in Ms Magazine, Feb.13, 2019
With this book, [Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia], Sabrina
Strings [associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine]
presents readers with an historical examination of fatness, Black women and the stigma
and fears surrounding fat Black women. Dr. Strings hypothesizes that fat phobia doesn’t
stem from health concerns, as so often argued, but instead from a desire to control
and oppress by gender, race and class.
