Women struggle with potential impact of abortion bill as court battle looms

David Meyer, professor of sociology at the University of California-Irvine who has written several books on social movements in America, sees the abortion debate differently. Social movements often respond to provocation and President Barack Obama provoked the anti-abortion movement to mobilize, he said. Now Republicans are in the position to make a concerted effort to see how far the courts will allow them to go. Since the courts are making the final decisions, he said, lawmakers often don’t have to compromise or live with the consequences of their decisions. “If this issue had been resolved through legislation would it have been resolved?” Meyer asked, citing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who initially posed the question.
