County officials say there are likely more than 474 people with mental health issues who are homeless in Orange County, and the money designated Monday could house roughly 600 people, based on county cost estimates. Costs paid by the public, like emergency medical treatment, go down significantly when disabled homeless people are housed, according to a study last year by UC Irvine.
