The Long Institute focuses on the opportunities and challenges in contemporary China, with particular emphases on its laws, economy, and society. Our core faculty hail from various departments and disciplines on campus, including Law, Sociology, History, Business, Earth System Science, and Anthropology.

We are delighted to offer support for graduate student research projects on China, connected to the exploration of challenges in contemporary China. This can range from summer travel stipends to funds for comprehensive surveys. The Long Institute is interested in encouraging a broader and more in-depth understanding of China through rigorous graduate-level research.

Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program on UCI. Your program may fall outside of what is currently represented by the core faculty, as long as your project demonstrates a sufficient level of inquiry into the development of today’s China.

We are currently accepting applications through mid-May. We will grant support and the level thereof based on your project description and an outline of your request.

Support for projects taking place from June 2017 to June 2018. We are awarding individual project grants out of a $10,000 pool, with a $1500 maximum per project, based on a number of factors, including – but not limited to -- an analysis of project scope, budget, and goal(s). 

 

Application Requirements

• Your CV;
• A one-page project description, sharing your research and why you are seeking support from the Long Institute;
• A detailed budget alongside an outline of how much you seek (up to USD $1500) and how you intend to use the funds (e.g. for ground transportation, flight, and/or archival access);
• A letter of recommendation from your advisor.

Funding Requirements

• Submit a follow-up essay on your research progress;
• Attend a luncheon where you will share your project and meet fellow recipients of the Long Institute Graduate Student Project Grant.
