In his recent study “Patriotism Abroad: Overseas Chinese Students’ Encounters with
Criticisms of China,” Henry Chiu Hail, a PhD student in sociology at the University
of California, Irvine, assesses interactions between these students and their American
counterparts…. Hail points to anecdotal cases wherein host students' inquiries about
political and social issues in China led to tense or negative interactions between
American and Chinese students.
