UC Irvine School of Law prof. Benjamin van Rooij presents lecture on challenges of legal compliance in China
- April 8, 2014
- Benjamin van Rooij (UCI Law) goes behind the pragmatic failings of the legal system in China, including noncompliance with labor safety laws, intellectual property rights, and pollution regulation
WHAT: UC Irvine School of Law presents a lecture on April 21, 2014 by Prof. Benjamin van Rooij, the John S. and Marilyn Long Professor of U.S.-China Business and Law and the academic director of the John S. and Marilyn Long U.S.-China Institute for Business and Law at UC Irvine.
WHO: Prof. van Rooij’s research focuses on why so many laws in China so often fail to have their desired results. One can think of China's challenges in implementing pollution regulation, labor safety rules, intellectual property rights, food safety, anti-bribery laws, rural land tenure and food safety law. Van Rooij's work offers important insights on the implementation of these laws and therefore on some of China's largest contemporary problems. His work spans over a decade of local level research and collaboration with enforcement authorities, legislators, farmers, workers, lawyers and academics. Van Rooij offers a unique in-depth and pragmatic view on why violations continue to cause major financial, health and ecological risks. His talk will discuss these insights as well as new ways to feasibly find ways out of China's compliance challenges.
Prof. van Rooij came to UC Irvine in 2013 from University of Amsterdam Law School, where he founded and directed the Netherlands China Law Centre. He has also taught at Leiden University Law School in The Netherlands.
