The partial government shutdown and other recent political matters have distracted
politicians and pushed immigration from their minds, said Leo Chavez, a professor
at UC Irvine. The day of nationwide demonstrations was meant to serve as a reminder
that the issue will not go away until it is fixed, Chavez said.
