From the Register-Star:
Professor of anthropology Bill Maurer recently was named the dean of social sciences
at the University of California at Irvine, but he started his academic career in Hudson.
Maurer was the valedictorian of Hudson High School in 1986 and recalled the city as
economically depressed at the time. “I have vivid memories of Greenport Elementary
School and the match factory that was across the street, Maurer said. “Every now and
then, there would be a chemical accident and we’d all be sent home early. That closed
down, the cement factory closed down, it was a place where industry was leaving. Now,
it seems that there has been a lot of investment in the city. It’s come a long way.”
