Riverside County supervisor race puts Latino vote in spotlight

From The Desert Sun:
Between a changing demographic and the candidacy of state Assemblyman V. Manuel Pérez,
both Republicans and Democrats already are discussing the role Latinos will play in
the 2014 county supervisor race. Pérez, a Coachella Democrat, last week kicked off
what’s bound to be a high-profile run against Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit,
a Bermuda Dunes Republican. If elected, Pérez would be the only Latino on the five-member
county board. And he would represent a district where the majority of the population
is now Latino. While a candidate’s race is not the only factor voters consider when
heading to the polls, experts say it is a factor. “People are sensitive around the
questions of race and ethnicity,” said Louis DeSipio, a University of California,
Irvine political science professor who specializes in Chicano and Latino studies.
