In a district that is growing less Republican and more Latino, seven-term incumbent
Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack understands the urgency of expanding her political
circle to appeal to Coachella Valley Latinos, a bloc that makes up 47 percent of registered
voters in the newly drawn 36th Congressional District... While other Latino candidates
are poised to take over seats vacated by retired white lawmakers, UC Irvine political
science professor Louis DeSipio says Ruiz is the only candidate within striking distance
of forcing a white incumbent out of office.
