Convention cities try to strike security, protest balance

- David Meyer, sociology professor, is quoted in USA Today and five additional publications August 21, 2012
From USA Today:
Tampa officials preparing to host next week's Republican National Convention say
they've figured out how to make the massive police presence that will be on hand seem
a little less intimidating: khaki uniforms... The messages of the protesters will
probably be similar to those in past conventions. David S. Meyer, a sociology professor
at the University of California, Irvine, said most protesters aren't challenging
the Democratic or Republican parties, but the entire political system. So they decry
the influence of money in politics, the country's financial system and the general
disparity between rich and poor. "What's underneath them? Absolutely everything,"
said Meyer, author of The Politics of Protest: Social Movements in America.
