During this century, the United States has been engaged in widespread military actions, including large-scale wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as little-publicized warfare in many other countries. Since October 2023, the U.S. has also been deeply involved in supplying large quantities of weapons, ammunition and intelligence to Israel for its war in Gaza. Media coverage and statements from American leaders about wars have been profuse – but how much do we really know about the causes and human realities of those wars? Norman Solomon, author of the book War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine, addresses the underlying patterns of messages and images that shape public perception of wars made possible by the U.S. government. Those patterns have been pervasive since the “war on terror” began twenty-three years ago in the aftermath of 9/11. And as the new paperback edition of War Made Invisible explores, similar dynamics of media and politics – with unique twists – have been at work as the U.S. ally Israel has waged war in Gaza, resulting in tens of thousands of civilian deaths during the last twelve months, with no end in sight.
