Throughout the years of the Cold War, Latin America experienced a surge in revolutionary and counter-revolutionary struggles. Despite the successes of the Cuban Revolution and national liberation struggles throughout the world, revolutionary struggles in Latin American were frequently faced with repression by authoritarian regimes backed by the United States. This roundtable discussion will highlight two historical struggles that experienced divergent results—the 1979 Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua and the repression of anarchist revolutionaries during Uruguay's civic-military dictatorship (1973-1985).

Please join us for an exciting discussion with historians Dr. Mateo Jarquín (Chapman University) and Dr. Troy Andreas Araiza Kokinis (UC San Diego) on their recent publications—The Sandinista Revolution: A Global Latin American History (UNC Press, 2024) and Anarchist Popular Power: Dissident Labor and Armed Struggles in Uruguay, 1956-1976 (AK Press, 2023). UCI history professor Dr. Kevan Aguilar will provide commentary on the two books’ contributions to the study of revolutions and counter-revolutions during the Cold War in Latin America.
