May Your Mental Health Thrive with H.O.P.E. (Hope Opportunity Progress Equity) Community Health Fair

Since 2021, UC Irvine’s Community Credit project has been exploring people’s financial lives, identifying ways for financial institutions to better understand their community’s actual needs. Abrazar (“to embrace” in Spanish) is an established non-profit that has been providing services to residents in Orange County since 1976.  

In Fall 2022 the UCI Community Credit team partnered with Abrazar to run an online training for SparkPoint OC clients and coaches with PhotovoiceWorldwide. Over four weeks, seventeen participants took over 200 photos exploring the concept of financial security: what it looks like, how it’s created, and how they felt when thinking about money. Through talking about their photos, people shared their financial stories, both of struggle and resilience, probing topics including debt, housing insecurity, family, and mental health. The sessions became a supportive learning community for listening, connecting, and collective meaning making.

We invite you to join us in-person to experience this community research collaboration at the debut photovoice exhibit: “Embrace, Educate, Empower: An Abrazar-UCI Photovoice Project on Financial Security with PhotovoiceWorldwide" on May 12 at the May Your Mental Health Thrive with HOPE community health fair located at the Delhi Center in Santa Ana. The event is open to the public with free fun activities for families and access to community resources.
