Despite the frequent dubbing of São Paulo as a principally immigrant city in the early twentieth century, Cosby demonstrates how Black women and their geographies were crucial to the city's formation and identity. In this talk, she'll address how Black women street vendors and their itinerant labor etched a Black spatial memory and that their presence was central to state actors’ and the elite’s narratives of whitening and modernization.
