Recently released in September, Polarized Cities: Portraits of Rich and Poor in Urban China features a powerful look into the lives of the impoverished and the affluent in today’s China. The anthology's editor, Dorothy J. Solinger (UCI professor emerita), invited experts in political science, sociology, anthropology, and history to explore the growing socioeconomic inequalities that have accompanied China's rapid rise.

Join us in honoring the book's release with Professor Solinger, who will read an excerpt and address questions during the Q&A that follows.

About the speaker:
Dorothy J. Solinger is professor emerita of political science at the University of California, Irvine. From 1992 to 2008 she was simultaneously senior adjunct research scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University. She is the author of six single-authored books, including the award-winning Polarized Cities: Portraits of Rich and Poor in Urban China and has also written nearly 100 book chapters and articles. She has held research grants from The Hoover Institution, The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the American Council on Learned Societies, the Ford Foundation, and The Smith Richardson Foundation, among others, and has taught at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Stanford University, and the University of Michigan. Her current work focuses on assistance programs for the urban poor.
