In 1963, Concha comes to Salinas, California looking for work to support her family in Mexico. Since women are not hired in the fields, she cuts her hair and dresses like a man to get work. In 1980, her abandoned daughter, Perla, follows her mother’s footsteps north for fieldwork. Perla’s daughter, Aurora, pulls her family out of the fields through education, but Perla does not understand her daughter’s ambition. Aurora turns to her ancestor, Concha, for support.
