Brian Jenkins

Brian Jenkins, UCI associate teaching professor and director of undergraduate studies in economics, writes, “What can the average consumer do to shield themselves, or at the very least, mitigate the financial impact of a recession on their lives?

My two suggestions would be to maintain a sufficient emergency fund and not make panicky decisions with long-term investments. Unemployment always rises during recessions, and people who lose their jobs during recessions end up bearing a disproportionate burden of the recession. An emergency fund can be helpful in offsetting the financial burden of unemployment”.
