In just two short days, UCI will celebrate its more than 11,000 graduates of the class of 2020 in ceremonies very different from our usual packed Bren Center affairs. |
The remote ceremonies for the university, our more than 2,700 social sciences undergraduate and masters students, and 106 newly minted Ph.D.s mark a historic point in time that has both tested and touted the resilience of the soc sci Anteater spirit.
The global response to COVID-19 and growing worldwide social movement against racism and anti-Black violence have shown the power of collective action to create positive change – a foundational concept of the social sciences and a point we drive home in our school's mission. And with social sciences accounting for more than 27% of this year's bachelor's degree recipients at UCI, I know that positive change will come from within our alumni ranks.
In this special commencement issue of our enews, I invite you to read about some of our outstanding class of 2020 change makers, their plans for making their mark and creating a better world for future generations.
To our graduating class: We are honored to celebrate all of your terrific achievements and accomplishments while you've been with us as students, and we are so proud to welcome you now to our more than 50,000 soc sci Anteater strong alumni network.
Congratulations, social sciences graduates of the class of 2020. Be bold, always break the mold, and be boundaryless in your pursuit,

We are not your standard school. Like Peter, our beloved Anteater mascot, we're quirky and different. We're on a mission to create positive change in society, economies and human well-being by breaking down traditional barriers and pushing the limits in teaching, research and service. Doing so requires a different attitude, aim and set of actions.
