- DeSipio elected president of Western Political Science Association
Louis DeSipio, Chicano/Latino studies and political science professor, is the new
president of the Western Political Science Association. DeSipio currently serves as
vice president and was elected last year at the annual meeting to serve as president
for 2015-16. He will take office in April following the annual meeting in Las Vegas.
DeSipio is widely recognized for his expertise in Latino political behavior and immigrant
incorporation, and his findings and expert perspective are regularly featured in national
media. His work has been funded by the Russell Sage Foundation, Emma Lazarus Fund
of the Open Society Institute, Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Rockefeller
Foundation. He is the director of UCI’s Center for the Study of Democracy and interim
chair of the Department of Political Science. He joined the UCI faculty in 2002 after
spending seven years as a political science professor at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign. From 2006-11, he served as chair of UCI’s Department of Chicano/Latino
Studies. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.
The Western Political Science Association includes more than 1250 political scientists
and is home to the Political Research Quarterly and Politics, Groups, and Identities journals. Member states include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho,
Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Alberta, British
Columbia, and Saskatchewan. The organization promotes the study and teaching of government
and politics and fosters research and discussion of public affairs.
